OUTER BANKS DETACHMENT COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMSToys for Tots Program
The Outer Banks Detachment's Toys for Tots campaign takes place each year during the months of November and December. It has become a very popular event for the members of our detachment and has a proven record of being a worthwhile program to the children of Dare County. Marine In Need Program
From time to time we learn of a local Marine in need of assistance, and true to our belief, we provide assistance to that Marine as needed. Whether the cause for the needed assistance is the result of a family crisis, a medical issue, unemployment, or some other reason, it is irrelevant to us. The only consideration is that a fellow-Marine is in need and requires our assistance. Since our establishment in late 2006, the Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment has remained true to our commitment to "take care of our own" by offering assistance needed to our local Marines and veterans from other branches of the armed-forces. We simply ask that should you know of a local Marine or veteran in need of assistance, that you please make us aware of that need. Scholarship Program
To be eligible, students must be graduating from Cape Hatteras Secondary School, First Flight High School, or Manteo High School during the year in which they are nominated. Nominations and the selection of one scholarship recipient for each school are to be performed by the respective high school's administrative, guidance, and teaching staff. The nomination and selection of scholarship recipients is to be based solely on the candidate's record of service to the Outer Banks community. Examples of such service include: Volunteer service to the candidate's school; volunteer service to community organizations or projects; individual self-directed projects for the betterment of the community, and; other projects or accomplishments deserving of special recognition. A candidate's academic or class standing is not a consideration for selecting the scholarship recipients. Following selection, each recipient will be presented with a suitable certificate and the scholarship proceeds by a member of the Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment at their respective school's graduating class awards ceremony. Marine Corps Rose Program
The rose is a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice Marines have made in the defense of our country. Placing roses on the graves of fallen soldiers is a custom that goes back to 1778 during the War for Independence. It became tradition among Marines during the First World War when grateful French citizens planted roses on the graves of Marines who had been killed in the assault on the German positions at Belleau Wood. Roses are handed out by detachment members at local events and establishments in honor of our fallen Marine brothers. Donations in honor of these men is collected and used to assist veterans and youth, and to provide other services to the community. We ask that whenever you see one of our members distributing these remembrances, to take one and wear it with pride. Eagle Scout Recognition Program
Every scout who reaches the rank of Eagle Scout is presented a citizenship award by our detachment on behalf of the Marine Corps League. The presentation ceremony is usually held in conjunction with his local troop's Court of Honor ceremony. To initiate recognition by the detachment, the supporting Boy Scout Troop should simply contact us and provide us with the necessary information so a detachment member can make the presentation of a Good Citizenship Award certificate.
